OTTAWA'S FIRST CITY HALL

Ottawa's first city hall which was built to house the fire station and police station. The hall was built in 1848 by Nicholas Sparks. The main floor was used as a fire station for four years.

This photo depicted here shows how firefighters and members of the public fought fires in 1873.

OTTAWA FIRE STATION NUMBER 5

Located at 235 Bruyere Street .This shows two of the horse of the time. A major increase in the number of horses the Ottawa Fire Department had was in the years between 1897 and 1901 when the numbers doubled to 32.

1904

Two firefighters Richard Nelligan and M. Burns stand in front of one of the rigs pulled by the horses. On the stall door you can see the name of one of the horses "Jim". When the alarms would sound, the stall doors would open. The horses would move to their positions to be harnessed to the apparatus.
