John Langford joined one of Bytown's volunteer fire brigades in 1847.The brigade was called the Mutual Fire Company which later became the ChaudiÃĻre Fire Company.
Langford, a well known contractor and stone mason built many of the homes and buildings in the city at the time.In 1862-1863 Langford was elected as a City Councillor. He held the position of Alderman of the Victoria Ward.
On April 20, 1867 after a time as Captain of the ChaudiÃĻre Fire Company he was appointed Chief of the fire brigades.Chief Langford was able to coordinate all six fire companies effectively.
